Firefly, Canva, Figma: Which AI Design Tools Actually Belong in Your Workflow

Firefly, Canva, Figma: Which AI Design Tools Actually Belong in Your Workflow

Every major design platform has spent the last couple of years bolting AI features onto their products, and the marketing copy for all of them sounds remarkably similar: faster, smarter, effortless. Some of that is true. Some of it is exactly what you’d expect from software companies racing to announce “AI” features before their competitors do.

Since this space moves fast and tool names age quickly, we’re going to focus less on ranking specific features and more on giving you a framework for evaluating whatever’s current when you’re reading this — using today’s landscape as the example.

Adobe Firefly: Built for Commercial Safety

Adobe’s generative AI tool, Firefly, has positioned itself specifically around being trained on licensed and public domain content, which matters more than it might sound. If you’re a business generating imagery you intend to actually use commercially — not just for internal brainstorming — the question of whether that image could create a copyright problem down the line is a real one. Firefly’s whole pitch is reducing that risk, integrated directly into tools like Photoshop and Illustrator that design teams likely already use.

Best for: Businesses that need generative image work with lower legal risk, especially if you’re already working inside the Adobe ecosystem.

Canva Magic Studio: Speed for Non-Designers

Canva has built its entire business on making design accessible to people without design training, and its Magic Studio suite of AI tools (background removal, text-to-image, AI copywriting assistance, resizing content across formats) extends that same philosophy. It’s not trying to replace a professional designer’s judgment — it’s trying to help a small business owner or marketing generalist produce something decent without one.

Best for: Fast turnaround on social content, simple marketing assets, and situations where “good enough and on-brand” beats “perfect but slow.”

Figma AI: Built into the Product Workflow

Figma’s AI features are aimed more at the professional design and product workflow — things like generating design variations, automating repetitive tasks within a design file, and speeding up handoff between design and development. This isn’t really a tool aimed at a solo small business owner; it’s aimed at teams already doing structured design and web/product work.

Best for: Businesses with an actual design or dev team doing more complex website or product design work, not one-off marketing graphics.

Midjourney and General Image Generators: The Wildcard

Standalone image generators like Midjourney remain popular for their distinct visual style and creative range, but they typically come with less clarity around commercial licensing and training data than Adobe’s approach, and they’re not integrated into a broader business workflow the way Canva or Figma are. Useful for concepting and inspiration; something to be more careful about for final, published commercial use.

The Bigger Point: AI Tools Didn’t Replace Design Judgment

Here’s the pattern across all of these, and it’s the actual point worth remembering regardless of which specific tools are popular by the time you’re reading this: every one of these tools is excellent at production speed and mediocre at knowing what your brand should actually look like.

They can generate an image fast. They cannot tell you whether that image reinforces or undermines the specific position you’re trying to hold in your customers’ minds. They can produce ten logo variations in a minute. They cannot tell you which one will still feel right in three years, or which one your competitor already has something suspiciously similar to.

This is becoming a real market dynamic worth naming directly: as more businesses use the same AI tools, a lot of AI-generated design is starting to converge on similar looks — similar layouts, similar color choices, similar “AI-generated” visual tells. If your brand’s visual identity is built entirely from default AI outputs, you’re not differentiating from your competitors — you may be actively converging with them.

A Sensible Way To Actually Use These Tools

  • Use them for speed on low-stakes assetssocial graphics, internal decks, quick concepting — where perfect brand precision matters less.
  • Don’t use them as your final word on brand identity. Your logo, your core visual system, your actual brand distinctiveness — that’s exactly the layer where human strategic judgment about your specific market and customers still matters most.
  • Build a real brand system first, then use AI tools inside it, not the other way around. A solid brand kit with defined colors, fonts, and visual rules keeps AI-assisted output consistent instead of scattershot.
  • Check licensing before publishing anything commercially, especially with tools that aren’t explicit about their training data and usage rights.

The Bottom Line

These tools are genuinely useful, and ignoring them isn’t a smart strategy either. But the businesses that get real value from them are using AI to move faster within a strong, deliberately built brand — not using AI-generated defaults as a substitute for having a brand strategy in the first place.

Want to know which parts of your design workflow are actually worth speeding up with AI, and which need real strategic thought first? Let’s talk it through.
